The Four B's - Bach, Beethoven, Brahms & Bernstein at Rippon Lea

Our next concert on Sunday August 20 at 6.30pm features delightful chamber works by some great composers whose names start with B!

Join Robert Schubert clarinet, Josephine Vains cello, and Robert Chamberlain piano, to hear Beethoven's vibrant Trio in B-flat Op. 11. Composed in 1798, its nickname - the Gassenhauer Trio - derives from the popularity of the opera tune Pria ch'io l'impegno ('Before I begin work, I must have something to eat') which Beethoven used as the theme for the 3rd movement, an engaging set of variations. In Vienna at this time, this tune was such a hit, it was said that every person in the crowded, narrow streets of Vienna (Gassen) was humming it!

Brahms’ Trio in A minor Op. 114 comes from towards the end of that composer's life. Inspired by both the warm mellow sound and musical sensitivity of Richard Mühlfeld's clarinet playing, plus the rich sound of the cello, Brahms created one of the great masterpieces for clarinet, cello and piano. The four movements contrast autumnal serenity, ländler-like gracefulness, gypsy fire and much, much more.

J S Bach’s popular Gamba Sonata in D BWV 1028, with its delightful Siciliano-style slow movement and energetic Allegro movements will be performed with cello and piano, while Leonard Bernstein’s Variations on an Octatonic Scale, transcribed for B-flat clarinet & cello, completes this highly attractive program!
